Liverpool City Council (Culture Liverpool)

From Jennifer’s own apprenticeship reflection.

Working in a fast-paced cultural environment, where campaigns can reach millions and shape a city’s reputation, requires more than creativity-it demands strategic thinking, adaptability, and measurable impact. My Level 6 Digital Marketing apprenticeship has enabled me to strengthen these skills while applying them in real time across major projects within Liverpool City Council.

I currently work as a Marketing Manager at LCC, where I lead on the promotion of major cultural events, tourism activity, and heritage projects across the Liverpool City Region. My role is fast-paced and varied, involving campaign planning, social media strategy, stakeholder engagement, and performance reporting across multiple platforms and audiences.

Alongside this, I am completing a Level 6 Digital Marketing apprenticeship, which has significantly supported both my professional development and my impact within my role.

One of the most valuable aspects of the apprenticeship has been the ability to apply learning directly into real-world projects. For example, I have been able to use customer journey mapping techniques from the course to enhance the visitor experience for Heritage Tours. This included developing pre-and post-visit communications, identifying key customer touchpoints, and addressing pain points to improve overall satisfaction.

Through the programme, I have strengthened my understanding of strategic marketing planning, particularly in areas such as segmentation, targeting, and campaign evaluation. I have applied this knowledge in my day-to-day work by developing structured campaign plans and aligning activity to clear objectives and KPIs. This has helped shift focus from purely delivering activity to demonstrating measurable impact.

The apprenticeship has also supported my development in data analysis and performance tracking. Using tools such as Google Analytics and social media insights, I now take a more evidence-based approach to decision-making. For instance, I have implemented KPI frameworks across multiple campaigns, allowing me to evaluate performance more effectively and optimise content in real time.

In addition, I have developed stronger project management and organisational skills. Balancing a demanding full-time role with academic study has required effective prioritisation, time management, and the ability to work across multiple deadlines. This has directly enhanced my ability to manage multiple campaigns simultaneously within my role, often across more than several social media platforms at peak times.

A key achievement during my apprenticeship has been the development of forecasting models to support revenue planning for heritage tours. By applying learning from forecasting modules, I created income projections based on occupancy scenarios, which are now being used to support business planning and decision-making. This demonstrates how academic learning can directly influence commercial outcomes.

The apprenticeship has also increased my confidence in presenting and communicating ideas at a strategic level. I have recently delivered presentations based on real workplace projects, receiving strong feedback for my ability to apply theory to practice. This has strengthened my ability to communicate effectively with senior stakeholders and contribute to strategic discussions.

Overall, the apprenticeship has played a crucial role in bridging theory and practice, allowing me to continuously improve and evolve within my role. It has not only enhanced my technical knowledge and skills but also reinforced my ability to think strategically, measure impact, and deliver meaningful outcomes.

Most importantly, the apprenticeship has given me the confidence to recognise the value of my work - translating experience into strategy, and ensuring that what I deliver not only reaches audiences, but makes a measurable difference.
