APM Chartered Project Professional (ChPP) Development.
Make your professional judgement visible.

Chartered status asks you to demonstrate how you work when the answer is not obvious. KBC’s ChPP preparation supports experienced project professionals in turning that experience into a clear, evidence-based account of competence. The learning is anchored in APM’s Chartered Project Professional standard, competence criteria and application guidance. You review your route, select suitable examples, critically examine technical choices and explain your personal contribution, results and learning. The aim is a credible application that reflects your actual practice, together with a sharper understanding of how you lead, govern and improve complex project work.

The professional challenge

Make the next decision with more confidence.

You have managed difficult trade-offs and influenced important decisions, but a job description or list of project outputs does not show how you exercised judgement. Preparation helps you identify the evidence, explain alternatives and demonstrate the difference your own actions made—without relying on broad team claims.

Who will benefit

For experienced project, programme, portfolio, PMO and project-controls professionals who are professionally active and ready to evidence responsibility and judgement. It is relevant to practitioners with recognised assessments and those considering another APM pathway, including specialists whose work enables or controls delivery.

What you take back to work

Practical capability, built through learning.

  • Select the APM application pathway that matches your recognised assessments and professional evidence.
  • Develop clear, authentic examples that connect decisions, personal actions, outcomes and reflection.
  • Critically explain the technical choices and professional behaviours relevant to the required competences.
  • Prepare an organised account of professional practice, CPD and ethics for the applicable APM assessment.
Inside the course

A connected learning journey.

A 14-session preparation model can alternate competence review, evidence workshops and professional discussion, ending with a readiness assessment. It should be adapted to the candidate’s pathway and existing evidence. These learning blocks describe a KBC preparation sequence; ChPP is a professional competence standard rather than a chapter-based course or automatic award.

01Route, readiness and evidence selection

Review APM’s eligibility requirements and distinguish technical knowledge from professional practice. Assess what existing qualifications demonstrate and where additional evidence is needed. Select projects, programmes, portfolios or control functions that provide a useful range of complexity and responsibility. Consider the currency of examples and whether your personal contribution can be explained and corroborated clearly.

Apply it at work: Build a readiness map linking your intended pathway, competence evidence and remaining development needs.

02Governance, reviews and strategic judgement

Examine decisions about authority, assurance, investment and project direction. Practise explaining how governance arrangements worked in context, where they needed adaptation and how reviews led to action. Select examples that show judgement across organisational boundaries rather than routine administration. Use the competence criteria to test whether the evidence demonstrates what you did, why and with what effect.

Apply it at work: Develop a governance or review example with a clear decision, alternatives considered and resulting action.

03Planning, finance and control

Review evidence across integrated planning or scheduling, budgeting or financial management, and change control where relevant to your selected competences. Explain the connection between baselines, forecasts, constraints and approved decisions. Focus on how you evaluated information and managed consequences. A calculation, report or schedule becomes stronger evidence when its use in a professional decision is clear.

Apply it at work: Prepare an evidence narrative showing how your analysis changed a plan, forecast or control decision.

04People, stakeholders and difficult conversations

Explore leadership, team management, stakeholder engagement, communication and conflict through examples from your own practice. Identify how you understood different interests, adapted your approach and sustained productive working relationships. Examine situations involving disagreement or uncertainty, recognising that credible professional evidence may include setbacks and learning as well as success. Clarify your role within collective action.

Apply it at work: Rehearse a concise account of a difficult stakeholder or team situation and the reasoning behind your response.

05Risk, ethics and professional development

Connect uncertainty management with accountability, ethics and continuing development. Review the quality of your risk and issue examples, including escalation, ownership and follow-through. Examine how professional conduct influenced a difficult choice. Organise CPD as evidence of learning and its effect on practice, and consider any elective competences that best reflect the breadth of your responsibilities.

Apply it at work: Prepare an ethical decision example and a reflective CPD record linked to changes in your practice.

06Application writing and assessment preparation

Shape evidence into a coherent submission using the current APM guidance. Practise answering questions about your contribution, the context, alternative approaches, outcomes and learning. Use feedback to improve precision and remove unsupported claims. Preparation remains responsive to APM’s assessment arrangements, particularly for learners whose applications will fall within the announced transition to a redesigned assessment in 2027.

Apply it at work: Complete a structured readiness review and practise defending selected evidence in professional discussion.

Your route to recognition

Know what the assessment involves.

APM awards ChPP after assessing the candidate against its standard. Under the current Pathway 2 process, a recognised technical-knowledge assessment is followed by a written submission and interview covering professional practice, with CPD, proposers and professional-conduct requirements. Other pathways differ. Preparation does not itself confer chartered status. APM plans a redesigned assessment for 2027, so the application route, evidence format and assessment arrangements must be checked against the requirements in force when the candidate applies.

Your written offer records the award or course completion requirements, any examination fees included, and the relevant eligibility checks.

Your questions, answered.

Does completing a KBC course make me chartered?

APM alone awards ChPP. A recognised assessment can satisfy an element of the application route, but professional practice and APM’s other requirements still need to be met.

Is KBC’s Certified PMO Professional Level 6 recognised?

APM currently lists it as a Pathway 2 recognised assessment for technical knowledge. That recognition applies to the named assessment; it does not automatically transfer to every KBC course or award ChPP on completion.

What happens if I apply in 2027?

APM has announced a redesigned assessment and advises current applicants to continue preparing. KBC should align your preparation to the confirmed transition arrangements and requirements that apply to your submission.
