Step 1 — Basic eligibility1 of 4

First, tell us about your basic eligibility

These questions cover the starting conditions for an apprenticeship in England.

Will you be aged 16 or over when the apprenticeship starts?
Are you currently in full-time education? For example, attending school, college or university full time.
Will your main workplace for the apprenticeship be in England? This normally means the physical workplace designated by your employer.

Your employment and employer

An apprenticeship is a paid job with structured training, so an employer is required.

Which best describes your employment situation?
Does your employer support you joining an apprenticeship? Select “not applicable” if you do not currently have an employer.
Will you have an employment contract for the duration of the apprenticeship?

Your role, learning needs and training time

KBC will complete a detailed initial assessment, but these questions help identify whether the programme is likely to be appropriate.

Is your current or planned role relevant to the apprenticeship programme? For example, project management, project controls, PMO, planning, risk, cost, change or related duties.
Would the apprenticeship teach you substantial new knowledge, skills and behaviours? Previous qualifications and experience are reviewed to avoid funding duplicated learning.
Can your employer release you for the required off-the-job training? The exact minimum hours depend on the apprenticeship standard and are agreed in the training plan.

Why apprenticeships

Apprenticeships combine paid employment, structured training and workplace application.

Existing employees can use an apprenticeship to develop occupational competence and progress.

Apply learning immediately

Use live workplace responsibilities and projects to build relevant evidence and measurable impact.

Structured employer support

Training plans, progress reviews and protected learning time create a clear development pathway.

Is there an upper age limit?

No. Standard apprenticeships are available from age 16 and do not have a general upper age limit.

Can an existing employee become an apprentice?

Yes. Apprenticeships can be used to upskill a current employee as long as the programme is relevant to the job and provides substantial new learning.

Can I apply if I already have a degree?

Yes. A previous qualification does not automatically make you ineligible. KBC must assess prior learning and ensure the apprenticeship is not duplicating knowledge and skills you already have.

What if I do not have an employer?

You will normally need to secure an apprenticeship job or employment arrangement before starting. KBC can explain the available route, but it cannot guarantee an employer placement.

How much off-the-job training is required?

The minimum is linked to the selected apprenticeship standard and is set out in the training plan. It must take place during paid working hours and be directly relevant to the apprenticeship.

What if the checker says I am not currently eligible?

You can still speak to KBC. Your circumstances may require clarification, a different start date, another programme or a commercial training route.
